I stayed two weeks in North Korea in april 2008.
The pictures you will see are not stolen ones, it’s just what i’ve seen during my trip and what the governement wants or allows to show to tourists.
When you’re in North Korea, you have always with you two guides, everywhere you go, and you do not choose where you want to go, you have to follow a very strict program.
I try to give you facts and stories...

  =================================

Songdowon international children’s camp in Wonsan.
The video games room. They play on Micro Genius computer game.

North Korean army 북한 Pyongyang
The famous Bush’s "axis of evil" includes Iran, Iraq, and North Korea. In NK, every young man stay for 6 years in the Army. It means that for 6 years, they won’t have many news from their families for most of them cos there is no email, mobile or private phone in North Korea.

On june 26, North Korea has handed over to China a dossier on its nuclear activities, and plans to destroy the cooling tower at its Yongbyon reactor complex.
The Bush administration may take North Korea off the State Department’s terrorism blacklist.

Kim Il Sung and the kid - North Korea
Mansudae Hill, in Pyongyang, where visitors (locals and tourists) are invited to lay flowers and pay respects to the Great Leader Kim Il Sung.
This statue impressed a lot of some of the african dictators, such as Ratzirak from Madagascar who ordered the same kind of statue to be built in his country.
The little girl is coming back from putting flowers in front of the statue, to pay respect.

Daddy, hold my hand!!!!!

In remote places, like parks, people accepted my shots, but kids were always frightened by my camera... Polaroids were very much appeciated!
Pyongyang, in front of Monument to the Founding of the Party, North Korea

Kim, Pyongyang North Korea, DPRK Polaroid

Hi there! I’m back on planet Earth! I was on a strange planet, without press, web, mail, mobile, advertising, demonstrations, freedom, cars (one good thing!),and tourists... North Korea!
  More to come!

I do not know what the Tv, teachers, or parents told to their children, but taking pictures of kids is more difficult than shooting a tiger in India!
On sunday, kids can walk in the streets, but they have to remain with same *** friends, and same age.

Mass game Pyongyang North Korea 북한
On a sunday afternoon, on the main Pyongyang place without any cars cos on sunday they are not allowed in North Korea, thousands of young girls obey to the orders of the dance professor to rehearse a mass game.

Pyongyang boredom - North Korea
The government takes care of everything in North Korea, even of the fun... On this sunday afternoon, all the kids were rehearsing a mass game, and the parents too. So the buildings and and the streets around were totally void...Strange mood.
You can find a famous satellite picture on the net showing a map of the Korean peninsula by night, with a huge difference between the north and south. In North Korea, there is no public lighting, and people use very low wattage bulbs in their houses. The North Korean capital is as surreal by night as it is by day. Due to the fuel crisis there’s hardly any traffic to be heard after dark, and nightlife is virtually non-existent. Only monuments are lit during local festivities.
Every hour, on the hour, from 6 am to midnight, loudspeakers blast out a patriotic song.
Tourists are totally forbidden from leaving their hotels to walk around town, even though Pyongyang is safe, that’s the rule.
The outsides of the buildings are regularly painted and renovated, but inside, they are rather run down.

Dressed for sunday - Pyongyang North Korea

Pyongyang is rather a dull town. There is no advertisings bilboards, the only colours come from the beautiful dresses of the women. Most of them are dessed like this on sunday with the "Choson Ot" or special occasions, and go to Kim Il-sung monuments to put fresh flowers.

Grand Monument on Mansu Hill - North Korea
Mansudae Hill, in Pyongyang, where we were invited (not forced, invited) to lay flowers and pay our respects to the Great Leader Kim Il Sung.
Those girls were cleaning the pavement (which was already perfectly clean). It’s part of the collective works.
Later in Pyongyang, i saw hundreds of people plantings trees in a park, others changing a paved sidewalk. No one is payed, it’s just a way to contribute to the prosperity of the nation...

On Mansu Hill there is the bombastic Grand Monument. An enormous bronze statue of Kim Il Sung was erected here in 1972, to honor his 60th birthday.

A busy sunday afternoon in Pyongyang North Korea
On Sundays, cars are not allowed in Pyongyang. Only vehicles belonging to the army and government are allowed on the road. Officials say that it’s to prevent pollution.
The intersections are guarded by traffic officers, mostly comprised of cute young women who do strange robotic movements, even if no cars are coming. Privately owned cars are almost unheard of in North Korea.
For a large part of the population the only transportation available are their own two feet, and thousands of people walk or ride everywhere.
  Beijing should imitate North Korea!

Local dress code - North Korea
All of the North Korean population wears the same kind of clothes. Men wear a black costume, and most of the women in town a very straight jacket. Everybody sports a badge with either the North Korean flag or a portrait of Kim Il Sung, depending on whether you are a member of the Party or not. It’s impossible for tourists to buy Kim Il sung badges. But many can be found in the streets, lost by workers!

Sleep well, our Army will protect you from the US... North Korea 북한

...seems to say this man to his child.
North Korea is the most militarised country in the world.According to the US State Department, North Korea has the 4th largest military in the world, at an estimated 1.2 million armed personnel for 23 millions north koreans.
Even if many think NK has nuclear bomb, the guns, cars, military equipment seems to come from the 50’s...

Pyongyang subway - North Korea

Pyongyang subway. Deep, very deep:120 meters below the surface! Two lines, old wagons in a DDR style.
All the 17 stations have names like Triumphant Return, Reunification, Paradise, Glory...i do not know how people reminds the names!

Nampho lighthouse, on the east coast, North Korea

Local dress code for men -

All of the North Korean population wears the same kind of clothes. Men wear a black costume, and most of the women in town a very straight jacket. Everybody sports a badge with either the North Korean flag or a portrait of Kim Il Sung, depending on whether you are a member of the Party or not. It’s impossible for tourists to buy Kim Il sung badges. But many can be found in the streets, lost by workers!

Picture taken in a park during the national Day, on april 15. We could freely meet korean people and try to talk to them. This was not easy, as few speak english...Do not forget that they do not watch sat Tv, or have the lastest Us or english DVD or CD...
All the kids in North Korea are involved in the Pioneers, a Party operated movement. Children enter the organization in elementary school and remain there until adolescence. The children wear the red kerchiefs, and when they are not at school, kids can roam the streets, but they have to remain with friends of their own age and gender.

Under the portraits of the beloved leaders - North Korea 북한

The portraits of the leaders are not only hung in the streets, in every house or building you can catch a glimpse of the portraits of Kim Il Sung and his son, Kim Jong Il. The pictures are slightly inclined toward the floor, so you can see the eyes of the leaders following your every move.
In every house, there is a government installed radio system which blasts out propaganda messages to the citizens, and which will even work when there are power cuts!

  This is my country
Songdowon international children’s camp in Wonsan.
This camp welcomes kids from DPRK, China, Russia, Mongolia, Tanzania ...and before, from all the communist countries, for holidays. They have a lot of activites, like karaoke, video games, etc...

The Respected Leader Generalissimo Kim Il Sung Will Always Be With Them
A little north korean girl with her english book. The cover represents the native house of The Respected Leader Generalissimo Kim Il Sung ( who Will Always Be With Them).
Propaganda starts as young as possible, with books, tales, and even military themed paintings in the children’s playgrounds. The best selling book in North Korea is a book called HOW I ESCAPED SOUTH KOREA. It’s about a hero who escaped the terrible regime of South Korea to find heaven in North Korea

 Sweet dreams kids

A Room in Songdowon international holiday children’s camp in Wonsan.
This is the kind of place that DPKR authorities like to show to visitors: a perfectly clean room, with a fridge, a TV, etc.
Of course, even in Europe, kids room cannot be so perfect...!
It was not possible to see a second one.
On the wall, this not Britney Spears or the Che posters, but the portraits of the leaders.

The North Korean government loves to give medals. Not only to soldiers, but even to elevators! An elevator has been built to last, for example, 20 years. If it lasts more than 20 years, the government awards it. PCs, bridges, tractors, buses, can all be awarded medals too.
On the left, the elevator in the picture received 3 "number 26” awards. It’s an exceptionnal elevator!
The “ number 26” award is allocated specifically to machines.
Well, problem is that when go inside, you know that this machine is over aged!

Not easy to get pictures from the nice girls in Pyongyang!
No fatties in the streets: people walk a lot, and many use bikes...and no Mc Do around!

A north korean woman in traditional dress. A pleasure for the eyes.

Few words about restaurants in North Korea: the food we had was good, bontiful, but was rather the same every day, and many times, everything was served cold...Squid, pickles, beef meat... No fruits at all. We saw once a girl selling apples in the restaurant, it was 1euro 1 apple.
The names of the restaurant are pretty simple: National Restaurant, or Restaurant Number 1.
We were often the only costumers in those places.
The girls on the picture are waitresses in Kaesong restaurant.
They shouted at me when i started to shoot a chair in the restaurant, i still do not know why!

Music is everywhere: in the streets, in planes, in restaurants, in buildings, in buses, in the subway…If you are lucky you will even see some workers building roads, with a live military band to stimulate them in their endeavor.

Grand People’s Study House CD library

Grand People’s Study House CD library.
The north korean can access this CD library and listen to them on big ghetto blasters. It seems that Grand Master Flash has sold his whole stock!
The choice in the CDs is not big, you’re not at Virgin Megastore...The guy on the pic was listening to the lastest Beatles record.
You can also listen to the radio, but only the national one, cos the tuner is blocked on the frequency...

Nurses with babies under the portraits of the 2 Kim.
I must admit that the story is not clear about this orphanage:
it is brand new, the babies and kids are full of life, no problem. Of course, it’s a place that is shown to foreign visitors.
The problem is that in fact, it is not a orphanage like in Europe, cos kids do have parents. But parents who do not have enough money , put their babies here.
The strange thing is: there’s a lot of twins, and even some triplets in the orphanage! The official explanation is: when a couple’s got twins, he cannot afford to educate them, so government takes care of them...

The portraits of the leaders are not only hung in the streets, in every house or building you can catch a glimpse of the portraits of Kim Il Sung and his son, Kim Jong Il. The pictures are slightly inclined toward the floor, so you can see the eyes of the leaders following your every move.

  KMZ Korean Demilitarized Zone

The Korean Demilitarized Zone is a strip of land running across the Korean Peninsula that serves as a buffer zone between North and South Korea. The DMZ cuts the Korean Peninsula in half, crossing the 38th parallel on an angle, with the west end of the DMZ lying south of the parallel and the east end lying north of it. It is 155 miles (248 km) long and approximately 2.5 miles (4 km) wide, and is the most heavily armed border in the world.
This isolation has created as a byproduct one of the most well-preserved pieces of temperate land in the world!!
The 2 countries have signed armistice but NOT the peace...

One big problem in the countryside is the lack of public transport, very few buses are around, and no cars, so you come across a lot of people walking for kilometers, or riding bikes. But even if they had transportation, people wouldn’t be allow to move around lot as they are required to remain in their villages.
Many check points are set up along the roads, so people walk along disused or deserted railway lines to avoid them. Another main problem is the poor productivity of the land, due to desertification and massive use of pesticides.
  ==================================

The highways in North Korea are huge and car less. Planes could land there. You can even see kids playing in the middle of the road. Security is a major problem because children and old people are not used to seeing cars, so they cross over the roads at any time, without watching out for oncoming traffic...
The only cars you can sometimes come across on highways are military ones, and most of them are stopped by the side of road, broken down. Or you can also see brand new Mercedes cars belonging to the north korean officials passing by at very high speeds.

Do not forget that you're in a country where you cannot really choose what you want to see!
So you have the chance to visit a farm, you 'll see one, very clean, big, with all the propaganda bilboards at the entrance.
Everything would be perfect but something is missing: the farmers!
You ask the guide where are the 300 farmers who work there...They have a day off today says the guide. Bad luck for us!
So we visit a house in the farm. As soon as we enter the house, the kids start to sing a patriotic song. Applause.

It’s clean, the babies and kids are full of life, playing with tons of toys. There are a lot of twins and even triplets inside. But this it is not an orphanage like any you’ll find in western countries, because most of the kids do have parents. Officials tell parents that they haven’t got enough money to raise their kids, so they put their babies in the orphanage, and government takes care of them. Lots of debates exist about those orphanages.

There is a famous satellite picture on the web showing a map of the korean penisula by night, with a huge difference beetween north and south. in North Korea, there is no public light, and in the houses, people use very low light. On this picture that i took from my hotel room, you just can see the public lights on the monuments.
As a tourist, it is not possible to walk at night in Pyongyang. You cannot go out from the hotel...

A local shop in North Korea

it is not difficult for a tourist to visit the local shops. I saw few, and everytime, i could buy cakes, chocolate (from Japan), biscuits etc. They sell a lot of canned food too.
But no fresh fruits, vegetables, meat, or Coca Cola.

Every year in Pyongyang takes place the Kimjongilia festival, opened on the occasion of the birthday of Kim Jong Il.
Exhibited in the venue of the festival are more than 25,000 potted Kimjongilias flowers cultivated by the military organs, commissions and ministries of the Cabinet and national institutions and other institutions and industrial establishments, servicepersons and people from all walks of life and school youth and children, says the officials.

There is a band who sings and plays live, to entertain the queue, cos thousands of people come to see the festival...Tourists do not have to queue.

All Pyongyang citizens will queue to see the festival which consists in a 2 storeys buildings full of flowers.
The queue is very impressive, i do not know how long people wait...Even during week end time, they have to queue!

Here is the only ads that you can see in Pyongyang, mixed with the war propaganda against USA! It is rather surprising to see this ad cos who can afford the price of such a car in North Korea?
Cars has built a factory in the north of the country, employing local north koreans, instead of chinese workers, to manage them in korean language. Perhaps the chinese start to cost too much?

Hands on her hearts, singing a patriotic song, in the orphanage.
It was very nice to see them sing like this, but i'm afraid the lyrics are not so nice...For sure, devotion to Kim is instilled at very young age.
There is a lot of twins and triplets in orphanage. The official reason is that parents cannot afford to raise 2 or 3 kids at same time.
If you search Google, you will find others reasons in many webpages, wrong or right, i do not know..
I just can tell that the ones we saw where happy, funny, and in good health.
We didn't choose the orphanage to visit.

I was not supposed to take pictures! I think you can read it in his eyes...
But even when i took pictures without permission, i had no problem with the guides, no one asked me about deleting a picture.
  I was lucky.

On April 15, many people were in the parks to celebrate the former president birthday.
It was nice to see some real life, with dances, lunches, and even alcohool.
For once, north koreans looked humans and did not act like the robots they seem to be when you see them walking in black in the streets.

Former President Kim Il Sung is named the Eternal Sun. As the leader of North Korea from its founding in 1948 until his death, when he was succeeded by his son Kim Jong-il. He was also the General Secretary of the Workers Party of Korea .He is designated in the constitution as the country's Eternal President. You can see his face everywhere in the country.
North Korea runs on its own calendar, based on the Juche. In 2000 for example, North Korea was in Juche years, year 89!

The big principles of the workers party:
  1. We must give our all in the struggle to unify the entire society with the revolutionary ideology of the Great Leader Kim Il Sung.

  2. We must honor the Great Leader comrade Kim Il Sung with all our loyalty.

  3. We must make absolute the authority of the Great Leader comrade Kim Il Sung.

  4. We must make the Great Leader comrade Kim Il Sung revolutionary ideology our faith and make his instructions our creed.

  5. We must adhere strictly to the principle of unconditional obedience in carrying out the Great Leader comrade Kim Il Sung's instructions.

  6. We must strengthen the entire partys ideology and willpower and revolutionary unity, centering on the Great Leader comrade Kim Il Sung.

  7. We must learn from the Great Leader comrade Kim Il Sung and adopt the communist look, revolutionary work methods and people-oriented work style.

  8. We must value the political life we were given by the Great Leader comrade Kim Il Sung, and loyally repay his great political trust and thoughtfulness with heightened political awareness and skill.

  9. We must establish strong organizational regulations so that the entire party, nation and military move as one under the one and only leadership of the Great Leader comrade Kim Il Sung.

10.We must pass down the great achievement of the revolution by the Great Leader comrade Kim Il Sung from generation to generation, inheriting and completing it to the end.

Festivity in town
The bad thing in North Korea, when you're a tourist, is that you need to respect a programme. For example, we came across this concert, but as it was not in the program, we didn't have the right to stop...So if you want to shoot, you have 5 seconds, the time your car passes in front..

 Karaoke on Missiles
North Koreans are fond of Karaoke. In every retaurants, you have a TV and you can sing on the patriotic songs. The pictures show missiles, army, parade...

Very special toilets
Songdowon international children's camp in Wonsan.
The whole building has an incredible architecture.
Toilets are special in North Korea: mainly, there is a door, but that you cannot lock..so you have to knock to know if anyone is already inside...
But the funniest ones where in the Children Thetare: the toilets do have a door, but...with in glass, and transparent!
So the man inside feels like beeing in a peep show!
  Lot of laugh.

Daddy, Let's attack america!

In North Korea, the father or the mother carries his child like that, even when they are 3 or 4. I haven't seen any stroller. It's the tradition.

Treasures are well kept
The International Friendship Exhibition, home to shrines to the 'Great Leader', Kim Il-sung, and his son Kim Jong-il. 600 rooms contain more than 250 000 gifts from all around the world... From ivory to kitsch fake copies. Samsung also offered a gold mobile phone...which isn’t very useful in North Korea, seeing as there is no mobile network. The funniest gift is a basketball signed by Michael Jordan, apparently given by Madeleine Allbright to Kim Jong Il. The museum has been created in the hill for security reasons. No pictures are allowed to be taken inside.
Our tour guide said with pride that if we stayed for 1 minute in front of each gift, we would need 1 whole year to visit the entire museum.
On the right: a stuffed alligator, a gift from a member of the leadership of the Sandinista National Liberation Front, and minister of the interior of the council of National Reconstruction of the republic of Nicaragua, in 1971.You have to wear protection on your shoes, as you may put some dirt inside…
The museum displays a collection of pictures showing Kim Il Sung alongside other leaders such as Castro, Khadafi, Sihanouk, and many others.
